Connecting Dots: Community Textile Project

Inspired by the East Asian tale of the Red Thread, which weaves destinies together, the notion of the Red Thread today embodies a broader sense of interconnectedness—bridging individuals and events across the globe.

We asked Vòng Vòng: Connecting Dots’ 24 collaborators to contribute a piece of fabric they were willing to part with. Those who could participate offered everything from the cuff of a beloved pair of jeans, to their late mother’s shirt, to salvaged threads from the very first pillow they laid their head on—handmade by their Palestinian-Syrian grandmother.

Those from afar who couldn’t send fabric sent their love. With the physical textiles and love from afar, we wove together a tapestry that represents our connection to one another and our collective effort to co-build new futures.

We hope to continue adding to this textile as Vòng Vòng develops and grows alongside our collaborators.

Gathered and sewn by Karen Thảo La as part of Vòng Vòng’s inaugural community engagement series: Connecting Dots (March 21–24, 2024).
