Đi Về // Asterisks Fill Infinite Circles is a compilation of visual, textual and sonic fragments from Canadian-Vietnamese artist Karen Thảo La’s personal repository, which are the tokens of her winding journey of returning home to ancestral sites of sustenance and heartbreak. This state of meandering — at times aimless, at others with intention — demonstrates her making sense of and coming to terms with fate, (familial) nostalgia, migration, love, and healing over the past 5 years. What started as a presentation of works in progress, rather personal, and spontaneous, has now aspired to serve as a common ground for processing current collective grief and frustration of continued displacement of people, and finding ways to (re)act together.
2. Vú Sữa // The Dreaming World
single-channel colour video, 48 minutes - Vú Sữa, acupuncture needles, ceramic pedestal stands
[KTL] When my grandma would return from her trips to Vietnam, she would always bring back a suitcase filled with Vú Sữa carefully wrapped in newspaper. In The Dreaming World, I feel and prick Vú Sữa intuitively with acupuncture needles as a metaphor for the journey of addressing intergenerational wounds and offer the pricked Vú Sữa to honour ancestors who were lost along migratory journeys. Vú Sữa, when translated directly, means breast milk.
[LL] The tale of the Vú Sữa tree in Vietnamese folklore honours unconditional maternal love, and represents a child's remorse for disrespecting his mother when she was still alive. According to the story, when the child finally came home to his mother’s disappearance, the Vú Sữa tree outside of his house started dropping its fruits for tree times. The first time he took a bite, it was acrid. The second time he bit into the hard seed. Then the third time, he could finally have a taste of the sweet milk-like liquid oozing out from the fruit. The story suggests only through a certain amount of negotiation with oneself, or one's environment that a person can understand their mother's love. In a seemingly similar attitude, acupuncture or châm cứu suggests a process of healing/curing, but not of immediate relief.
